Mens hipster; minumum of six yards and measured from the top of the hip to the top of the knee; view our full measurement guide.

Mens traditional; minimum of eight yards and measured from two inches above the top of the hip to the top of the knee.

Both kilts can be worn lower on the body for casual wear. We recommend that the whole knee is shown for formal wear with the socks pulled up. If socks are pushed down in a casual manner then there is no preconceived ettiquette to the length of the kilt. We believe that kilt length is a matter of personal preference.

The amount of fabric used in a 21st Century kilt is determined by the weight of the fabric, the size of the customer and the style of the kilt;

An eight yard tweed kilt can be heavier and warmer than necessary. A customer exceeding a seat measurement of 46" would be recommended to choose a seven yard hipster kilt in order to achieve a decent depth and amount of pleats. The pleats on plain kilts have an equal depth, where as they are not on a tartan kilt. Therefore, a plain kilt can have just as good a swing using less material.

Women as usual get all the choice

How much yardage? How long? How much leg do you wish to show? What size straps and buckles?

Ladies kilt are made with a minimum of three yards of fabric. The actual amount will be decided with the customer and is dependant on size and desired depth of pleat/swing.

21st Century womens kilts are made with darts in the front apron to flatter the female shape. They can also be made with a narrower front apron to further flatter the figure. Our ladies kilts are machine sewn unless otherwise stated.

The fit is also down to personal preference. Kilts can be measured from above the hips or around the hips. If self measuring, please advise us of where your measurements were taken from.

Length... Up to you, anything from the indecent to the floor.

The main pictures throughout this Website are the result of one days work - "THE BIG KILT SHOOT"

Over forty professional models, friends and customers, braved the elements on a Scottish Sunday in March to take part.

The images are grouped into collections and speak for themselves. A huge thank-you goes out to all involved. Extreme gratitude to the principal photographer - Anna Isola Crolla and second photographer - Kehpa. The models were styled and directed by Howie, Charlie and Kay.

We would also like to take this opportunity to highlight the immaculate hair, make-up and grooming of the models directed by the late George Paterson. Thank-you also to George’s talented team from Patersons SA.
